Nick Tse Ka Wo, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at The HKCT Institute of Higher Education who specializes in Addiction and Mental Health. Nick is also a registered social worker (SWRB), certified counsellor and Associate Fellow (HKPCA) in Hong Kong. He is the first MINT-certified MI trainer and the rater for the MINT trainer certification scheme in Hong Kong. Tse has practised over two decades to clinical social work with focus on mental health, addictions, youth outreach, and residential services. He was part of the team of trainers for the first local MINT-endorsed Training of New Trainers (TNT) led by Dr. William Miller, the Founder of Motivational Interviewing, in 2018.
In 2023, Dr. Tse initiated and formulated a coding team responsible for assessing the quality of MI practices in the Chinese language in support of the TNT assessment of the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). His work in promoting the application of MI has extended to mainland China, where he has provided training in Putonghua and is planning to organize the first MINT-endorsed TNT in 2024.
For over a decade, Tse has dedicated himself to promoting MI in Chinese communities. Tse is also a co-founding member and the Chairman (2017-2019) of the Chinese Association of Motivational Interviewing (CAMI). He has delivered MI and addictive behaviours training to various professional bodies, non-governmental organizations, and universities across Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Mainland China.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Tse has been involved in several MI research projects at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (POLYU). He has co-authored several MI research projects funded by competitive research grants. His research focuses on developing and evaluating collective motivational interviewing (CMI) for helping people with addictive behaviors and mental health challenges.
Dr. Tse has also served as a co-founding member and Chairman (2017-2019) of the Chinese Association of Motivational Interviewing (CAMI). He has delivered MI and addictive behaviors training to various professional bodies, non-governmental organizations, and universities across Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Mainland China.
He has developed collective motivational interviewing (CMI) which facilitates the productive involvement of concerned significant others in the motivational process. By drawing the preliminary result of CMI applying for the families with drug use problems. In 2023, Dr. Tse obtained a research grant to extend the investigation of CMI in working with adolescents with internet gaming disorder.
